Come to me, my magicite pretty...

Come, and help me build the Magitek Empire of Kefka!

Although he's a general, Kefka isn't happy with his position in the Gesthalian Empire. Actually, he's downright pissed. He wants to be in absolute control.

Kefka follows Gesthal's orders, and while he seems to be on good terms with the emperor, there is an underlying sense of envy. Kefka acts as per Gesthal's orders, even when he doesn't want to — the trip to Figaro, for example.

Phooey! Emperor Gesthal's stupid orders! Edgar, you pinhead! Why do you have to live out in the middle of a stinking desert? These recon jobs are the pits!

Kefka expresses his displeasure with the emperor, but the focus of his rant is on Edgar. This is very early in the game, so Kefka's plans might not be in too much motion, but his anger, while veiled, is present.

Kefka's next mission is to Narshe, where he does battle with the Returners. There is no mention of Gesthal, nor is there any indication of Kefka's feelings about going to Narshe other than the fact that he wants the esper at any cost.

The first actual declaration of Kefka's longing for power is when they go to the Magitek Research Facility, where he says the following:

I'm a god! I'm all-powerful! Uwee-hee-hee... I'll collect more espers... I'll extract their magic... And then... ... ... I'll revive the Warring Triad!

There is an undeniable lust for power present. Kefka is building up his power and resources in preparation for his eventual usurption — evidence that this is something he's been planning for some time.

It isn't until they reach the Sealed Gate that Kefka announces what he wants: "I'm here to open the way to my promised glory!" This likely refers to how he became a Magitek knight — he went mad (though a significant level of sanity remained — see insanity for details) and believed he truly deserved his power.

In Thamasa, Kefka acquires a great deal of power by getting a great deal of magicite from the espers there. He eliminates his primary rival for power, Leo, and even calls up an illusion of Gesthal to weaken the other general.

At last, on the Floating Continent, Kefka reveals his hand. Celes stabbing him, though, is what pushes him over the edge. He promptly implores the gods to show him their power and proceeds to unleash it on the emperor he supposedly serves. He laughs in the face of death, protected by the Triad's embrace, and eliminates Gesthal before rending the world asunder...
