Kefka's background isn't very well known, mainly because you get it from this one totally missable NPC in Vector when you break into the Magitek Research Facility. I, however, found this guy and copied down what he said. :D
NPC: Here's one for you... That guy Kefka? He was Cid's first experimental Magitek knight. But the process wasn't perfected yet. Something in Kefka's mind snapped that day...!
So although Kefka was deemed a success, all was not well. But what was Kefka like before the infusion? Did he become the first Magitek knight as a child or an adult? I suppose this is part of Kefka's allure, this not knowing his origins. It doesn't seem to be something Kefka cares about, though — he's focused on ruling the world, not his past.
Kefka is also not a waiter, as he declares in the Doma scene. XD
